Whatever You Want

23 Jun

I will confess to a bit of a fondness for a couple of Status Quo songs, so a couple of years ago when an Australian supermarket chain, Coles, persuaded the Quo to redo “Whatever You Want” and “Down, Down” as advertising jingles for them I was a little worried.

However, to offset this blatant commercialism of popular music, Status Quo not only re-recordered the songs, they starred in the commercials on TV.  They were quite up front about their reasons for doing so.  According to an interview in a newspaper that I saw, they frankly admitted that they needed the money, as they had “pissed their pension money up a wall”.

Over the last couple of years I’ve got used to bopping along to “Whatever You Want” flogging Vegemite, taco sauce, and cornflakes whilst doing small domestic tasks of an evening.

To my horror, however, the commercials have disappeared off our screens.  Coles Supermarkets are now using One Direction to flog their products.

Ummm, excuse me oh Almighty Advertising Gurus, it may have escaped your notice that TEENAGERS DON’T BUY THE BLOODY GROCERIES!!!  Those of us who do purchase groceries don’t want our senses assaulted by a bunch of annoying teenage males whose testicles haven’t descended yet!  One Direction are slightly less annoying than Justin Beiber, and that’s not saying much.

I want the Status Quo commercials back.  They were fun, quirky, entertaining, and above all, musical.

The One Direction commercials are just downright bloody irritating.  The appearance of one is the signal for me to pick up the remote and change channels.

Whatever you want?  Well I want the Status Quo commercials back!  Otherwise I might just be taking a ride on the midnight train to the opposition.  They don’t have Status Quo advertising their products, but they also don’t have One Direction.  I win on at least one count.

Agreed. I liked Status Quo commercials better. I look away when the little boys come on. I have no interest in what they are selling. If we can’t have Status Quo, give me a talking dog and cat instead.

Interestingly, the day I wrote this a Status Quo commercial appeared during the news. To say I was happy was an understatement.
