Mary Watson: In the Shadow of Sherlock Holmes

9 Jun

“Mary Watson: In The Shadow of Sherlock Holmes” is a collaborative venture between Enrico Solito, Stefano Guerra, Gian Luca Guerra, and Mauro Castellini. It is published in English by MX Publishing. I was given a copy of this book by MX Publishing to review.

Mary Morstan becomes Mary Watson after the events of “The Sign of Four”. In this book we learn a little about Mary’s early life, and then her subsequent career as a detective herself. Not chasing after criminals like her husband’s friend, but domestic dramas.

It says a lot about this book that I sat down and read it in one sitting.

The book is beautiful. Told in the first person, interspersed with entries for Mary’s journal.

Enrico Solito, Stefano Guerra, Gian Luca Guerra, and Mauro Castellini give us a Mary Morstan to capture the hearts of all Sherlockians. Brave and intelligent, with a strong social conscience, this Mary Morstan is no cypher or plot device. A shadow even in ACD’s own writing, this Mary Watson stands forth proud and strong. A wonderful take on a canon character. A solid addition to any Sherlockian library.
